The Help You Home travel safety app and wearable wristband was inspired by relatable independent traveller challenges. Unreliable internet connections, dying device batteries, and getting lost on trips provided the catalyst for creative, local travel tech entrepreneur Grainne Bankhead. Now available in the App Store and Google Play, the app has been designed to increase confidence in solo travellers. Grainne wants to facilitate peace of mind for adventurers, parents at home, and loved ones keeping up to date with your trips.

In this blog post, we’ll look at how this latest, innovative travel safety app delivers peace of mind for adventurers large and small, and those who love them. We’ll look at who it’s for and what problem it solves, then explore the key features to demonstrate why it’s worth considering. This review is unsolicited and impartial, though the app’s creator did supply me with access to the app and wristband device for testing purposes.

Who is the Help You Home App Designed For?

Have you ever been happily trekking and lost your bearings after a day’s sightseeing? Or headed out for a night, phone battery down to zero, and lost touch with your friends? Or, are you a parent concerned about your child’s safety while travelling to school or on extended trips?

If so, I can think of a few of the most obvious users this clever travel safety app has in mind:

• Independent travellers or those who want to plan their trip in advance and travel with centralised access to details of localised friends, emergency services, group trips, and other contacts while they’re out and about
• Students who are away from home for the first time, on a gap year, or those who simply want to keep in close contact with friends particularly on nights out or get back to their accommodation quickly
• Festival goers who may be moving between different gigs, sites, and new friends across a long weekend and want to keep in contact with their core friend group via prepared meeting points
• Children who use public transport to get to school, on school day-trips, and parents who’re concerned they know what to do if the bus or train doesn’t turn up, they wander away from the group, or get completely lost

What Travel Safety Problem Does It Solve?

Are you an independent traveller moving from country to country, travelling alone for the first time, or someone who meets up with other travellers only occasionally?

Then, you’ll know the pressure is on you alone to keep your phone charged and keep your information and documentation (leaflets, tickets, bookings, contacts, locations) in order and up to date. While we all rely heavily on our cell phones to access this and other information on the go, dying batteries, a lost bag, or even theft can derail our day’s plans quickly. In my case, everything is available from my cell phone. But, this often means accessing endless unconnected flight, train, bus, hotel and other apps; opening documents containing a copy and paste of names and addresses; scrolling through contacts for that elusive name; forgetting your hotel’s street address; and any number of other mini calamities.

The Help You Home app ensures that you have all the information you need at your fingertips, grouped for each trip. And, should you become a victim of theft, lose your your phone, or suffer an assault, you can still access crucial, pre-saved, trip-specific, local information via the Help You Home wristband; send a precise location alert to a nearby contact; or call local emergency services.

Plan Ahead to Make Everyday Travel Run Smoothly With Trip-Specific Contacts

Preparing ahead makes trips more enjoyable and relaxed. But they can also make dealing with rare emergencies much smoother, meaning you can get access to the right help quicker on those rare occasions you need it. On the Help You Home app, it says:

The person who cares most may not be the person who can help fastest.

Ain’t this the truth! You may have someone at home in Ireland, but they’re not much help in an emergency when you are unceremoniously kicked off a late night tram that was supposed to run to 2am! Yes, this really happened to us on a night out in Budapest. Someone read the timetable wrong.

This contacts feature helps with:

• Finding contacts on group trips, solo journeys, or first holidays
• Avoiding searching through messages, or emails while you’re under stress or in danger in an unfamiliar environment
• Quickly accessing local emergency services

Get Quick Access to Accommodation, Booking Details, & Other Location Info for Each Trip

Each trip has its own set of information, identified by a Trip ID.

This helps with:

• Pinning accommodation, event addresses and dates, transport locations, travel insurance, medical information, and meeting points for quick directions when your phone battery may be worn down after a long day’s travel, snapping pics, or trekking
• Reducing stress when plans change by accident or design by having swift access to details you have stored about bookings, travel or health insurance you may need in a hurry to help you get access to the information you need

Access Contingency Plans & Meeting Points Rapidly

Plans often change last-minute. With a little planning, meeting point information can help everyone reconnect if the group inadvertently splits up.

This helps with:

• Accessing contingency plans like prepared meeting points helping stray adventurers separated from their group at busy festivals, unknown cities, and other events to reconnect with their friend group
• Keeping school-leavers unfamiliar with large events and crowds connected and confident at festivals and other events
• Coordinating groups if you’re the designated driver or responsible adult

Send Instant Precise Location Alerts or Trigger the Built-in Personal Alarm

An unfortunate fact of life is that even on adventures, we need to be on guard for emergency situations – everything from a low battery to a violent attack. This feature is useful for travellers of all kinds, but may be of particular interest to parents of younger kids.

This is how it works:

• Automatically alert trusted contacts by SMS with your current, precise geographical location
• Set off a light and sound alarm, followed by the automated location alert after 30 seconds if the alarm is not turned off
• Use PINs, if configured, to:
  
  • STOP and fully deactivate the alarm, including cancelling the alert or
  • SILENCE the sound, turn off the light, but still send an alert discreetly to your contact(s) showing your exact location
• Get attention from onlookers, fast, with the one-button Personal Alarm

Alert Contacts & Send Precise Location in Emergencies Using the Connected Wristband Device

Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled technology allows the Help You Home app’s wristband device to connect with your smartphone during setup in the same way that we tap our banking or credit cards on a machine to pay for shopping. It displays only the information you have chosen in advance: individual trip ID, your name, your emergency contact(s), or essential medical information, for example.

Once it is set up, it can be tapped against any compatible smartphone to open the secure wristband page. Crucially, another person scanning it with their smartphone does not need to have the Help You Home app installed.

The secure wristband page can even be used to:

• Call Emergency Contact (already configured during the trip setup)
• Use the Send Location by Text feature to text the scanning phone’s current location to that trip’s preset contact (e.g. fellow traveller, a holiday rep, someone nearby or someone at home
• (UK only and if the traveller has register for the emergency SMS service during the initial setup of the app) send alerts to the emergency services via 999

Because the wristband relies on close proximity, it is more secure than many other options and limits the possibilities of casual interception or ‘eavesdropping’. In addition, it’s lightweight, durable, and waterproof, therefore safe to wear at the beach, pool, or while trekking down a mountain in the rain!

There are two options:

• Tap your phone against the wristband in an emergency to access your emergency contacts in seconds or have a bystander do so with their own device (there is no need for them to have the app)
• Tap the wristband to automatically send your precise geographical location to your emergency contact by SMS
